Sensex, Nifty open in red; Rupee opens flat

India's stock market opened lower on Thursday with Nifty slipped below 11,650 level, led by weak trading in Cipla, HCL Technologies, Infosys and TCS are among others. Overseas, Asian stock markets, led by Japan, are mostly lower and U.S. stock futures fell on Thursday amid concerns about the rapid spread of the coronavirus outside China and its impact on the global economy.



Meanwhile, the Indian rupee opened flat at 71.65 per dollar on Thursday versus previous close 71.66. Whereas, Gold prices rose on Thursday as fears of a pandemic heightened after coronavirus infections surged in Italy and Iran, triggering a move away from riskier assets.



On the corporate front, India Cements share price rose over 6 percent on February 27 after billionaire Radhakishan Shivkishan Damani and his brother Gopikishan Damani increased their stake in the company for the second consecutive day.



At 9:29 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 39686.23 down by -202.73 points or by -0.51 %, and the NSE Nifty was at 11633.65 down by -44.85 points or by -0.38 %.



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 1264.00,+0.67%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 109.80,+0.55%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1215.60,+0.34%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1670.55,+0.26%), Nestle India Ltd. (Rs. 16298.05,+0.23%), among others.



On the flip side, the top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 574.00,-1.71%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 497.40,-1.21%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2097.40,-1.21%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1186.75,-1.08%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 371.00,-0.96%), among others.



On the sectoral front, IT index was at 16465.01 up by 84.67 points or by 0.52%. MphasiS Ltd. (Rs. 869.10,+1.97%), MosChip Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 9.15,+1.67%), Cigniti Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 280.00,+1.61%), Shivalik Bimetal Controls Ltd. (Rs. 43.20,+1.53%), Sonata Software Ltd. (Rs. 346.95,+1.15%),.



Among others, Realty index was at 2210.63 down by -34.93 points or by -1.56%. Housing Development & Infrastructure Ltd. (Rs. 2.41,-4.74%), Prestige Estates Projects Ltd. (Rs. 324.65,-2.83%), Godrej Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1045.80,-2.82%), Sobha Ltd. (Rs. 308.95,-2.18%), Sunteck Realty Ltd. (Rs. 354.00,-1.14%),.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 1327 , shares advanced were 498 while 771 shares declined and 58 were unchanged.
