Post-Session: Sensex rises 114 pts; FMCG, auto stocks rally

Equity benchmark Sensex rose 114 points on Thursday as investors accumulated FMCG, auto and IT stocks amid gradual reopening of the economy.



ITC was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying over 7 per cent, followed by Asian Paints, Hero MotoCorp, Maruti, Bajaj Auto, Sun Pharma, TCS and HCL Tech.



On the other hand, IndusInd Bank, NTPC, Bajaj Finance, HDFC and L&T were among the laggards.



Buying was seen in frontline stocks of sectors like auto, IT, metals and FMCG as traders took note of gradual opening of the economy, raising hopes of economic recovery, said Narendra Solanki, Head- Equity Research (Fundamental), Anand Rathi.



However, at the fag-end of the session, some selling was witnessed as negative global cues continued for the second straight day and traders booked profits as weekly expiry neared, leading to indices losing majority of the gains, he added.



The 30-share benchmark index ended at 30932.9 up by 114.29 points or by 0.37 % and then NSE Nifty was at 9106.25 up by 39.7 points or by 0.44 %.



Sensex touched intraday high of 31188.79 and intraday low of 30765.32 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 9178.55 and intraday low of 9056.1



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were ITC Ltd. (Rs. 188.90,+7.48%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1575.00,+4.97%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2103.05,+3.93%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 5046.00,+3.14%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2623.80,+2.57%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 346.95,-2.91%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 90.35,-2.74%), Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 1988.85,-2.65%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1596.25,-1.88%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 820.40,-1.75%), among others.



Auto index was at 13021.31 up by 311.34 points or by 2.45%. Ashok Leyland Ltd. (Rs. 46.10,+6.34%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2103.05,+3.93%), Exide Industries Ltd. (Rs. 154.50,+3.34%), Bharat Forge Ltd. (Rs. 291.10,+3.32%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 5046.00,+3.14%),.



Power index was at 1426.41 down by -16.99 points or by -1.18%. Adani Transmission Ltd. (Rs. 178.50,-3.12%), ABB India Ltd. (Rs. 753.40,-2.81%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 90.35,-2.74%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 25.50,-1.73%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 32.90,-1.35%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2630 , shares advanced were 1451 while 978 shares declined and 201 were unchanged.
