India’s sugar production increased by 22 per cent to 15.9 million tonnes as of January 15 in the 2025–26 sugar season, supported by higher sugarcane availability and improved yields, according to Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA).
Production during the same period last year stood at 13 million tonnes. ISMA said the rise reflects better recovery rates and a higher number of operational mills in the current season.
As of January 15, around 518 sugar mills were operational across the country, compared with 500 mills during the corresponding period a year ago. The sugar season in India runs from October to September.
