Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty signals a gap-down start; US, Asian markets fall

The benchmark Sensex and Nifty are likely to open on a negative note on Friday as trends in the GIFT Nifty indicate a weak start for the broader market with a gain of 119.50 points.



Further, the March quarter earnings of India Inc, and first phase of the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 will be on investors' radar.



In a highly volatile session, Indian equity indices failed to hold on to their opening gains and ended lower for the fourth straight day on April 18 with the Nifty below 22,000.



On Thursday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 72488.99 down by -454.69 points or by -0.62 % and then NSE Nifty was at 21995.85 down by -152.05 points or by -0.69 %.



On the global front, In Asia, Japan's Nikkei plunged 3 per cent, South Korea's Kospi shed 2 per cent, and Australia's ASX, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.3 per cent each.

Overnight, Wall Street indices ended a choppy session on a mixed note where the broad S&P 500 index lost 0.22 per cent, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.52 per cent.

On NSE Future and Options, total number of contracts traded in index futures was 562910 with a total turnover of Rs. 53521.51 Crore. Along with this total number of contracts traded in stock futures were 1958463 with a total turnover of Rs. 171208.61 Crore. Total numbers of contracts for index options were 498243275 with a total turnover of Rs. 52332950.22 Crore. and total numbers of contracts for stock options were 8042117 with a total turnover of Rs. 732081.85 Crore.



The FIIs on 18/04/2024 stood as net buyer in equity and debt. Gross equity purchased stood at Rs. 10993.53 Crore and gross debt purchased stood at Rs. 1304.38 Crore, while the gross equity sold stood at Rs. 14258.26 Crore and gross debt sold stood at Rs. 4667.51 Crore. Therefore, the net investment of equity and debt reported were Rs. -3264.73 Crore and Rs. -3363.13
