GAIL achieves milestone with First LNG Vessel Discharge at Dabhol During Monsoon Season

GAIL (India) Limited has successfully received and discharged its first LNG vessel, GAIL Bhuwan, at the Dabhol LNG Terminal during the monsoon season, following the completion of its landmark Breakwater Project. The vessel was berthed on June 2, 2025, in the presence of GAIL Chairman & Managing Director Shri Sandeep Kumar Gupta and Director (Marketing) Shri Sanjay Kumar. This marks the beginning of year-round, uninterrupted operations at the terminal.

The commissioning of the breakwater, after securing all necessary regulatory approvals, has officially transformed Dabhol into an all-weather port. This development is particularly significant as it enables safe and reliable LNG handling during the challenging Southwest monsoon period, which historically impacted marine logistics along India’s west coast.

Located strategically on the Maharashtra coastline, the Dabhol LNG Terminal has a regasification capacity of 5.0 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and is a key node in the country’s natural gas network through the Dabhol–Bangalore and Dabhol–Panvel pipelines. Notably, the breakwater at Dabhol is an island structure—unlike conventional land-connected designs—representing a major engineering feat accomplished through collaboration among various stakeholders and deployment of innovative marine construction techniques.

With the breakwater now operational, the terminal is expected to benefit from enhanced vessel access and improved capacity utilization, boosting India’s energy infrastructure and supply dependability.

This milestone comes as GAIL plans to expand the terminal’s capacity from 5.0 MMTPA to 6.3 MMTPA in the next three years. Once completed, the expanded facility is projected to handle up to 100 LNG cargoes annually, significantly contributing to India’s long-term energy security.
