Potato extend losses as spot demand declines

The traders offloaded their holdings in the midst of sufficient stocks holdings in the domestic markets due to the fresh supply from the growing belts as a result of which the prices of potato for the May contract fell by Rs 7.10, or 1.09 per cent to Rs 645.20 per quintal, with a business volume of one lot at the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).

The potato for the April contract fell by Rs 4.70, or 0.75 per cent to Rs 615 per quintal, with a business turnover of 13 lots at the MCX.

The potato for the March contract also fell by Rs 3.30 or 0.52 per cent to Rs 630.10 per quintal, with a trade volume of 29 lots at the MCX.

Moreover, the slow demand at the physical markets also influenced the prices of the potato.

The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial Solanum tuberosum of the Solanaceae family (also known as the nightshades).

The word potato may refer to the plant itself as well as the edible tuber. In the region of the Andes, there are some other closely related cultivated potato species.

First introduced outside the Andes region four centuries ago, today potatoes have become an integral part of much of the world's cuisine and are the world's fourth-largest food crop, following rice, wheat, and maize.
