The prices of cardamom for the March contract surged by Rs 30.20, or 2.17 per cent to Rs 1,420 per kg, with a turnover of 87 lots at the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) due to the support of the good demand at the spot markets.
The spice for the January contract also rose by Rs 23.10, or 1.75 per cent to Rs 1,336.90 per kg, with an open interest of 433 lots at the MCX.
The commodity for the February contract also inched up by Rs 19.30, or 1.41 per cent to Rs 1,384.70 per kg, with a business volume of 115 lots at the MCX.
Moreover, the tight stocks as a result of the reduced supply in the physical market also supported the prices of the spice.
Cardamom refers to several plants of the genera Elettaria and Amomum in the ginger family Zingiberaceae.
Both genera are native to India, they are recognised by their small seed pod, triangular in cross-section and spindle-shaped, with a thin papery outer shell and small black seeds.
Elettaria pods are light green while Amomum pods are larger and dark brown.
