Digital India BHASHINI, Kathmandu University explore collaboration in Language AI

The Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) held discussions with Kathmandu University to explore potential collaboration in Language AI and digital language technologies for Nepal.

The discussions focused on strengthening existing language models and developing new AI models for underrepresented languages, with particular emphasis on Nepali, Newari, Tamang and Gurung, as well as traditional scripts such as Prachalit Lipi and Ranjana Lipi.

The two sides also discussed challenges around building high-quality language datasets, improving translation capabilities and meeting the computing requirements for training and scaling language models.

Potential applications including voice-first solutions were also explored, with an emphasis on translating language technology into practical digital experiences for local-language users.

The engagement brings together BHASHINI's language technology capabilities and Kathmandu University's research and digital public infrastructure expertise, with the aim of advancing Language AI and supporting Nepal's linguistic diversity in the digital ecosystem.
