Post-Session: Sensex slumps 774 pts, Nifty ends below 17900

Equity markets succumbed to severe selling pressure on Wednesday led by losses in financial stocks and the monthly F&O expiry that weakened investor sentiment.



Across the two indices, IndusInd Bank, HDFC twins, SBI, Adani Ports, Tech M, Axis Bank and Ultratech Cement were the top drags, slipping 1-4 per cent.



On the other hand, Bajaj Auto, Maruti, HUL, Britannia, Tata Steel, and Hindalco firmly defied the weak trend and ended with gains of up to 1 per cent.



Within sectors, the Nifty PSB index tanked 3.6 per cent followed by bank, financial indices. Auto, metals and FMCG pockets closed nearly flat with fractional cuts.



The 30-share benchmark index ended at 60205.06 down by -773.69 points or by -1.27 % and then NSE Nifty was at 17891.95 down by -226.35 points or by -1.25 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 60899.21 and intraday low of 60081.36 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 18100.6 and intraday low of 17846.15



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2628.00,+1.14%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 8781.75,+0.96%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 121.00,+0.54%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 166.40,+0.39%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 339.65,+0.21%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were State Bank of India (Rs. 568.80,-4.30%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1160.70,-4.26%), HDFC Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1648.20,-2.78%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 2710.10,-2.02%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 891.70,-2.02%), among others.



Metal index was at 21443.11 up by 22.2 points or by 0.1%. Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 489.25,+1.03%), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (Rs. 357.95,+0.79%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 726.45,+0.64%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 121.00,+0.54%), APL Apollo Tubes Ltd. (Rs. 1161.70,+0.49%),.



Power index was at 4344.36 down by -121.52 points or by -2.72%. Adani Transmission Ltd. (Rs. 2534.10,-8.06%), Adani Power Ltd. (Rs. 261.10,-4.99%), Adani Green Energy Ltd. (Rs. 1855.45,-3.04%), ABB India Ltd. (Rs. 2882.85,-2.04%), Tata Power Company Ltd. (Rs. 201.55,-2.04%),.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3867 , shares advanced were 1201 while 2507 shares declined and 159 were unchanged.
