Post-Session: Stock markets end lower amid caution ahead of Q1 earnings

Stock markets ended lower on Wednesday, weighed down by selling in IT and oil & gas stocks, as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of the earnings season amid mixed global cues.



The 30-share benchmark index ended at 83536.08 down by -176.43 points or by -0.21 % and then NSE Nifty was at 25476.1 down by -46.4 points or by -0.18 %.



Sensex touched intraday high of 83781.36 and intraday low of 83382.28 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 25548.7 and intraday low of 25424.35



The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 940.40,+1.40%), Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 2422.65,+1.24%), UltraTech Cement Ltd. (Rs. 12555.55,+0.90%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 3177.05,+0.62%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 299.60,+0.59%), among others.



The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1674.05,-2.03%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 159.00,-1.82%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 1612.35,-1.39%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1519.05,-1.28%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 840.80,-1.16%), among others.



FMCG index was at 20577.63 up by 151.74 points or by 0.74%. Emami Ltd. (Rs. 608.10,+6.08%), Eveready Industries India Ltd. (Rs. 349.70,+5.44%), Godfrey Phillips India Ltd. (Rs. 8500.15,+3.27%), Prataap Snacks Ltd. (Rs. 1084.10,+3.14%), Zydus Wellness Ltd. (Rs. 2035.60,+2.77%),.



Oil&Gas index was at 28149.59 down by -403.48 points or by -1.41%. GAIL (India) Ltd. (Rs. 185.05,-3.94%), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 150.10,-2.41%), Indraprastha Gas Ltd. (Rs. 222.50,-2.37%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 445.05,-1.69%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 349.85,-1.59%),.



The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 4367 , shares advanced were 2159 while 2030 shares declined and 178 were unchanged.
